How many megapixels is 4K? A 4K UHD screen of 3840 × 2160 pixels has 8,294,400 pixels, which is about 8.3 megapixels. A megapixel is one million pixels, so you find the figure by multiplying width by height and dividing by 1,000,000. The chart below gives the same answer for every common video resolution from 720p to 8K.
Megapixels in 720p, 1080p, 1440p, 4K and 8K
| Name | Resolution (pixels) | Total pixels | Megapixels | Pixels compared with 1080p |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 720p | 1280 × 720 | 921,600 | 0.92 | 0.44× |
| 1080p (Full HD) | 1920 × 1080 | 2,073,600 | 2.07 | 1× |
| 1440p | 2560 × 1440 | 3,686,400 | 3.69 | 1.78× |
| 4K UHD | 3840 × 2160 | 8,294,400 | 8.29 | 4× |
| DCI 4K | 4096 × 2160 | 8,847,360 | 8.85 | 4.27× |
| 5K (16:9) | 5120 × 2880 | 14,745,600 | 14.75 | 7.11× |
| 8K UHD | 7680 × 4320 | 33,177,600 | 33.18 | 16× |
The 4K UHD figure matches Wikipedia's 4K resolution page, which states that 3840 × 2160 has 8,294,400 pixels, or approximately 8.3 megapixels. The other rows are calculated by multiplying width by height.
How are megapixels calculated?
Megapixels = width in pixels × height in pixels ÷ 1,000,000
For 1920 × 1080: 1920 × 1080 = 2,073,600, and 2,073,600 ÷ 1,000,000 = 2.07 megapixels.
A megapixel is only a count of pixels. It does not say how large the picture is on a screen or on paper, because that depends on the display or on how many pixels you print per inch.
How do you turn megapixels into a resolution?
You need the shape (aspect ratio) of the image as well as the megapixel count, because many different widths and heights give the same total. Multiply the megapixels by 1,000,000 and by the ratio (width ÷ height), then take the square root to get the width. Divide the width by the ratio to get the height.
Typical results:
| Megapixels | Shape | Width × height |
|---|---|---|
| 12 | 4:3 | 4000 × 3000 |
| 24 | 3:2 | 6000 × 4000 |
| 48 | 4:3 | 8000 × 6000 |
| 12 | 16:9 | about 4619 × 2598 |
Example: for 12 MP at 4:3, 12,000,000 × 4 ÷ 3 = 16,000,000, and its square root is 4000. The height is 4000 ÷ (4 ÷ 3) = 3000.
A megapixel figure is a rounded number, so check the exact width and height in the file's properties.
Will my photo fill a 4K screen?
A 4K UHD screen is 3840 pixels wide and 2160 pixels tall. To fill it without stretching or black bars, the photo needs at least 3840 pixels across and 2160 pixels down, after you crop it to the screen's 16:9 shape. Total megapixels alone are not enough, because the shape matters.
| Photo | Megapixels | Enough pixels for 4K? | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3500 × 2400 | 8.4 | No | Width is below 3840, even though 8.4 is more than 8.29 |
| 4000 × 3000 (4:3) | 12 | Yes, with a crop | Scale to 3840 × 2880, then trim 720 pixels of height |
| 6000 × 4000 (3:2) | 24 | Yes, with a crop | Crop to 6000 × 3375 (16:9), which is more than 3840 × 2160 |
"Enough pixels" here only compares pixel counts. How the picture looks also depends on the screen and on the viewing distance.
What is the difference between 4K UHD and DCI 4K?
Both are called 4K, but they are different sizes. 3840 × 2160 (4K UHD) has an aspect ratio of 16:9 and 8,294,400 pixels, and Wikipedia describes it as the dominant 4K resolution in consumer media and displays. 4096 × 2160 (DCI 4K) has 8,847,360 pixels and is used mainly in digital cinema production. When a TV or monitor is sold as 4K, check its listed resolution.
Common mistakes and a quick checklist
- Comparing megapixels only. A picture with more megapixels can still be too narrow or too short for a screen.
- Mixing up 4K names. 3840 × 2160 and 4096 × 2160 are different sizes.
- Using the rounded figure for exact work. Use the real width and height.
- Forgetting the shape. Cropping to 16:9 removes pixels.
Before you decide:
- Read the exact width and height of the photo or screen in pixels.
- Multiply them and divide by 1,000,000 to get megapixels.
- Compare each side with the target, not only the total.
- Allow for any crop to the target shape.
Frequently asked questions
How many megapixels is 4K? About 8.3 megapixels for 4K UHD (3840 × 2160 = 8,294,400 pixels).
How many megapixels is 1080p? 2,073,600 pixels, or about 2.07 megapixels.
How many megapixels is 8K? 33,177,600 pixels, or about 33.18 megapixels. That is four times the pixels of 4K and sixteen times the pixels of 1080p.
How many megapixels is a 4000 × 3000 photo? 12 megapixels (4000 × 3000 = 12,000,000).
Is a 12 megapixel photo enough for a 4K screen? By pixel count, a 4000 × 3000 photo has enough pixels to cover 3840 × 2160 after cropping to 16:9. Check the exact width and height of your own file.
